After being destroyed in a radiation accident, Hank Henshaw became a being of pure energy, Henshaw beamed his consciousness into the Kryptonian birthing matrix that brought Superman to Earth. The experience granted him an irrational hatred of Superman. Utilizing the matrix again to construct a cyborg body out of Superman's DNA and Kryptonian alloys, he teamed with the interstellar tyrant Mongul bent on wreaking havoc throughout the universe.
Once a leading high-wire artist for a traveling circus, Boston Brand was felled mid-performance by an assassin's bullet. Impressed by Brand's many acts of kindness during his life, the goddess of balance, Rama Kushna, allowed him to return to Earth as a spirit to find his own killer. After avenging his death, Rama Kushna assigned Deadman the task of welcoming new souls to the afterlife. From time to time, Deadman has lent his assistance to living heroes in situations of interdimensional crisis.

When Green Lantern Hal Jordan was incapacitated en route to a JLA adventure, Hal's power ring sought out and selected architect John Stewart to be Hal's "alternative" peacekeeper of space sector 2814. Honest and utterly without fear, John was eventually awarded his own power ring and full-time status as a Green Lantern in his own right. He continues battling evil as a Green Lantern, his dedication earning him full membership in the JLA.
When the Green Lantern, Sinestro, turned rogue, the Guardians of the Universe named Katma Tui as his replacement. Katma Tui served with distinction for a long time before retiring. She returned to service at the urging of Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern of Earth, and trained Jordan's replacement, John Stewart. Katma Tui came to love Stewart, and the two of them married, but Katma Tui was murdered shortly thereafter by longtime Green Lantern foe Star Sapphire.
Nuclear radiation led to the mutation of a humanoid monster known as "The Shark". The Shark has increased intelligence and psionic powers as a result of this mutation, but retained his species' primal predatory cravings. He can survive on the psyches of enemies as well as their flesh. The shark continues his sinister mutations evolving into a more vicious creature with every transformation. He recently joined the reconstituted Secret Society of Supervillains for an attack on Atlantis.
Uncle of Darkseid, the ruler of the warlike planet Apokolips, Steppenwolf commanded the Apokoliptian military. Looking to bring about a war between Apokolips and its sister world, peaceful New Genesis, Darkseid suggested that Steppenwolf travel to New Genesis and hunts its residents for sport. In implementing the plan, Steppenwolf killed the wife of New Genesis' ruler, Izaya. War commenced, and Steppenwolf was slain by Izaya. Darkseid later resurrected Steppenwolf, and placed him in charge of the planet's military once more.

Vic Sage was the smartest investigative reporter in Hub City, but he could only get so far playing by the rules. So Vic invented an alter ego to prowl Hub's back alleys -- A faceless enigma known to criminals as "The Question." His war on crime brought him into conflict with Lady Shiva, the world's deadliest martial artist. Killed in that battle, he was revived and trained by kung fu master Richard Dragon. Since his brush with death, The Question returned to action driven by a new philosophy and a burning need to expose corruption and injustice to the cold light of day.
